Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Inspection in Atlanta: What to Know First

HeatShield chimney inspection in Atlanta runs $199 to $349 for a Level 2 camera inspection, which is what most HeatShield owners need before deciding whether their liner can be repaired or needs replacement. We schedule within 3 to 5 business days, and every inspection includes written photos, the camera footage, and an honest recommendation, including when the liner can safely be left alone. If you own a HeatShield liner or you’re told you need one, call (678) 263-7908 and we’ll walk you through what to expect before anyone sets foot in your home.

This page is for Atlanta homeowners with a HeatShield product who want a straight answer about whether it’s doing its job. Maybe a home inspector flagged it, maybe you smelled something in the flue, or maybe a contractor said you need a full reline and you want a second set of eyes. Nathan Corliss and our crew inspect HeatShield liners the same way we inspect everything else: camera first, photos in hand, price in writing before any work starts.

How HeatShield Products Fail, and How We Fix Them

HeatShield is a cementitious coating applied inside an existing flue liner, and when it’s mixed and applied correctly, it does what the manufacturer says it will. But we’ve seen enough HeatShield jobs in Atlanta to know where the weak points are. Here’s what actually shows up during our inspections:

  • Bubbling or spalling at the mortar joints. HeatShield’s Cease-Fire and Sealant systems rely on bonding to the original clay tile or masonry surface. In Atlanta’s humidity cycle, porous clay absorbs moisture year-round. If the original liner wasn’t fully dried before application, or if water has been getting in through a cracked crown, the coating separates at the joints. On camera, it looks like peeling paint. The fix is usually localized patching, not a full reline, if we catch it before the gaps widen.
  • Thin or inconsistent coverage in corbeled flues. Older Atlanta chimneys, especially in Grant Park and Inman Park, have corbeled or offset flue paths where the clay tiles don’t stack straight. HeatShield’s applicator system can struggle to coat the inside of those offsets evenly. We regularly find sections where the coating is visibly thinner, sometimes down to bare clay. We measure liner thickness on camera, and if there’s a gap, we document it and quote a targeted resurfacing rather than a whole-chimney project.
  • Failed adhesion at the top of the flue. The first 12 to 18 inches below the chimney crown take the worst of Atlanta’s rain and freeze-thaw cycles. We see HeatShield delaminating right at the top seal more than anywhere else. In many cases, the freeze-thaw expansion at the crown level has cracked the coating before the rest of the liner shows any wear. Fixing this starts with fixing the crown, then reapplying the top section, in that order. If the crown isn’t addressed, a new coat fails the same way.
  • HeatShield over an unlined or improperly prepped flue. HeatShield was never designed to be applied as a structural liner over gaps or missing sections of clay tile without proper mesh reinforcement. When a previous contractor skimped on prep, the coating sags and cracks within a season or two. We occasionally find homeowners who were told they got a “HeatShield system” but actually received a single-coat Cerfractory patch job. Our inspection tells the difference, and photos don’t lie.
  • Joint sealant breakdown from creosote saturation. For wood-burning fireplaces, HeatShield’s Cerfractory and joint sealant products face the same creosote chemistry as any liner. In Atlanta, a lot of chimneys burn green or unseasoned wood during the occasional cold snap, then sit damp for months. Creosote penetrates micro-pores in the sealant, and over repeated burn cycles it degrades the bond. Regular sweeping and keeping moisture out are the only real prevention, and we’ll tell you if your burn habits are shortening the liner’s life.

Our HeatShield Chimney Inspection Process

Here’s what happens when you book a HeatShield inspection with us in Atlanta:

  1. 1
You call, a person answers. We ask basic questions about your chimney’s age, what you’re seeing, and whether you have an existing HeatShield liner. If you do, we ask when it was installed and whether you have paperwork. That helps us know what to look for.
  2. 2
We arrive and set up. The fireplace area gets drop cloths, the chimney gets brushed free of loose creosote or debris so the camera has a clean path, and we take stock photos of everything before we touch anything.
  3. 3
The camera goes in. We run a push-rod video camera the full length of the flue, top to bottom, including the smoke chamber and the throat. On a HeatShield job, we specifically pause at the top seal, at every clay tile offset, and at the cleanout, because those are the three spots where failures show up first.
  4. 4
We measure and document. Liner wall thickness, crack widths, spalled areas, moisture staining, and any gaps between the HeatShield coating and the original liner. You get photos and video link before we discuss a single repair.
  5. 5
We give you the price on paper. If work is needed, we write the quote. It includes what we found, what we recommend, whether a repair is possible or a replacement makes more sense, and the dollar figure to the penny. If nothing is needed, we hand you the inspection report and tell you that plainly.
  6. 6
If you approve, we fix it and guarantee it in writing. Repairs get a written guarantee, and if a covered repair fails within the guarantee period, we come back at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

What HeatShield Chimney Inspection Costs in Atlanta

Straight numbers, the way Nathan likes to give them:

  • Level 1 inspection (visual, accessible areas, no camera): $129 to $189. Good annual check when you burn regularly and nothing has changed.
  • Level 2 camera inspection (full flue video, all accessible areas, written report with photos): $199 to $349. This is what you need if you’re buying or selling a home, if you’ve had a chimney fire, or if a HeatShield liner is showing signs of trouble.
  • Level 3 inspection (Level 2 plus exploratory opening of concealed masonry): $500 to $1,500 depending on how much we have to open and restore. Rare, but sometimes necessary when a liner failure is hidden behind brick.
  • HeatShield patch or localized repair: $400 to $1,800 depending on the square footage and access. We’ll show you the camera stills that justify every dollar.
  • Full HeatShield resurfacing: $2,500 to $6,500 for a typical single-flue Atlanta chimney. A new stainless liner from DuraFlex typically runs $3,000 to $7,000 installed. We’ll give you both numbers and let the camera evidence drive the decision.

What moves the price: roof access difficulty, flue height, whether scaffolding is needed, how much prep the original liner requires, and whether we’re also fixing the crown or cap that caused the failure in the first place. Call (678) 263-7908 for an exact quote. Estimates are free and come in writing.

Why Atlanta Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney Atlanta for HeatShield Work

We’re an independent HeatShield service provider, which means we don’t get paid to recommend the product, we get paid to tell you the truth about it. If a HeatShield liner is holding up fine, we say so and we hand you the proof. If it’s failing, we show you the video and hand you the repair quote. The decision stays yours.

Our techs inspect and repair HeatShield liners week in and week out across Atlanta, from Buckhead to Decatur to Smyrna. We also work with DuraFlex stainless systems and Gelco sealants, so when the honest answer is that your HeatShield liner has reached the end of its useful life, we can quote you a replacement without pushing you into a product we don’t install. Every repair is backed by our written guarantee, and if it fails, we come back and fix it free. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and it’s the same promise on every job we do. Tell me the price first, then tell me why, that’s the only way we know how to do it.
