Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
A Gelco chimney cap installation in Atlanta typically runs $340 – $640 installed, depending on the cap model, flue size, and roof access. We stock Gelco-compatible caps on the truck and can usually complete the swap same day. Most Atlanta homeowners discover their cap has failed after hearing water drip in the firebox after a heavy summer thunderstorm, or spotting rust flakes on the hearth where they shouldn’t be.
The cap is the part that takes the beating so the flue doesn’t have to. In Atlanta, that means sun, humidity, the occasional hailstorm, and the creosote-laced exhaust that eats through thin metal over time. A failed cap doesn’t just let rain in. It invites squirrels, birds, and every oak leaf in DeKalb County down into your flue.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco caps mount by one of two methods, and knowing which one your flue tile uses is the first compatibility filter. Most Atlanta chimneys built before 1990 use the inside-mount model, where the cap slides into the flue tile like a cork. Newer construction and prefab systems with round metal flues almost always use the outside-mount or band-mount style, which clamps around the outside of the flue. Same brand, different world.
Gelco’s product lines break out by material and application:
- Stainless steel caps (304-grade, the practical minimum for Atlanta humidity)
- Galvanized steel caps (cheaper, but see below for the Atlanta reality)
- Copper caps (premium look, typically on higher-end homes in Buckhead and Sandy Springs)
- Multi-flue caps for chimneys with two flues exiting the same top
To match the right replacement, measure the inside dimensions of your flue tile for an inside-mount cap, or the outside circumference for a band-mount. If you can’t read the measurements on a worn label, do this: shine a phone flashlight inside the cap from below and look for the stamped model number on the underside of the hood. Gelco starts part numbers with “G” followed by the flue measurement.
One compatibility gotcha we see regularly in Atlanta: a previous technician installed an inside-mount cap sized for a 13×13 flue tile by driving it into a 13×9 opening with a mallet. It “fits” for a season, then wind works it loose and it rattles against the tile at 3 a.m. during a March gust. If your cap doesn’t seat firmly without force, it’s the wrong size.
For Gelco specifically, we use OEM Gelco caps when the existing cap is stainless and the owner wants a like-for-like replacement. For clients open to alternatives, we stock equivalent stainless caps from Olympia Chimney and Famco that meet the same spec. We’ll tell you the price difference for both and you decide.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks on the flue tile or cap skirt – Atlanta’s summer humidity and winter rain cycles do this to galvanized steel faster than anything. If you see rust running down the tile, the cap’s protective coating is compromised and water is now entering the joint between cap and flue. This is the most common early warning in the Atlanta market.
- Water in the firebox after a storm – Not always the cap, but when a Gelco cap was installed as the only top seal, water entering the flue usually means the cap mesh is blocked with creosote, the seal has failed, or the cap has shifted. Leaves and debris inside the firebox are a related sign the mesh is torn.
- Squirrel or bird noise from the flue – If you hear scrabbling behind the wall above your fireplace, the cap mesh has rusted through or bowed out. Atlanta’s squirrel population views a compromised chimney top as a gated community. Once they’re in, removal plus cap replacement becomes the job.
- Metal rattling at the flue top during wind – The cap should be friction-fit or clamped tight. A loose cap banging against the tile means the mount has loosened, often after years of thermal expansion and contraction across Atlanta’s freeze-thaw winter cycles. Ignoring it leads to a cap eventually lifting off in a storm. We’ve found more than a few Gelco caps in neighbors’ yards.
- Strong downdraft or smoke backing into the room – Not always cap-related, but a cap that’s partially blocked or improperly sized can reduce draft enough to change how smoke exits. If the problem started recently and your cap hasn’t been inspected, the two are worth checking together rather than assuming the liner needs replacement.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed Gelco cap replacement in Atlanta runs $340 – $640 for most single-flue standard caps. Multi-flue caps add $150 – $250 depending on the span. Stainless runs toward the middle and upper end of that range; galvanized sits at the bottom. Here’s the line-item breakdown:
- Cap (stainless, single flue): $140 – $260 depending on size and model
- Cap (galvanized, single flue): $65 – $105
- Standard labor and roof access package: $180 – $280
- Multi-flue cap material: $220 – $390
- Sealant, flashing touch-up if needed: $25 – $75
- Total typical installed price, single flue: $340 – $640
The range depends on roof pitch, chimney height, and whether the existing cap comes off cleanly or fights us. If your cap was siliconed down by a previous technician, removal takes longer. We include that in the written price before we start, not as a surprise line item after the fact.
Every Gelco cap installation from Ashby Chimney Atlanta includes a written price before any work begins, a written guarantee on the completed repair, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap installation fails within the guarantee period, we return and make it right at no charge. We don’t charge extra for the promise. It’s how we work.
DIY or Call Us?
We’ll be straight with you: the hardest part of installing a chimney cap isn’t the cap itself. It’s the ladder. If your roof is one-story with a gentle pitch and you already own the cap with the correct measurements, a careful homeowner can tackle this in an afternoon. You’ll need the right flue dimensions, a caulk gun with high-temperature silicone, and a drill for the clamping screws on band-mount models. Get the measurements right and the cap seated firmly, and you’ve done a competent job.
Where DIY goes wrong in Atlanta is steep roofs, high chimneys, and uncertain measurements. We routinely see caps sized by a ruler laid across the top tile that don’t actually seat because the tile is thicker than expected on one side. We also see old caps removed and the new one left unsealed, which is how water finds its way between cap and tile within a season. And we’ll say this plainly: a steep roof with a tall chimney is not where you want to learn ladder safety. We carry fall protection gear on every cap replacement and the techs doing the work are background-checked and uniformed.
If you’d rather not spend an afternoon measuring tiles and balancing on a roof, call (678) 263-7908 and we’ll bring the right cap to your door with the price already written down.
FAQs
How long does a Gelco chimney cap last in Atlanta?
A stainless Gelco cap in Atlanta typically lasts 7 – 12 years before the mesh or seams begin to visibly degrade. Galvanized caps run 3 – 5 years in Atlanta’s humidity before rust compromises the seal. Factors that shorten lifespan here include tree-heavy lots (falling branches and leaf debris sitting on the cap), proximity to pool chlorine, and burning wet or unseasoned wood, which accelerates creosote buildup on the mesh.
Can a Gelco chimney cap be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes. If the hood is solid but the mesh has rusted through, we can replace the mesh without replacing the entire cap in many cases, saving about 40 – 50% of the cap material cost. If the skirt is rusted, the mounting tabs are crimped, or the cap has lifted and bent from wind, replacement is the better call because the integrity of the seal is compromised. We’ll show you the damage with photos and tell you honestly when repair isn’t worth the patch.
How long does a Gelco cap installation actually take?
Most single-flue cap replacements take 45 – 90 minutes from the time we set the ladder to the time we’re back down. Old cap removal, tile inspection, and sealant application are all included in that window. If we find a cracked flue tile while the cap is off, we’ll photograph it for you and discuss whether it’s a priority or something to monitor, which may extend the visit.
Do you stock Gelco caps on the truck?
We stock common Gelco-compatible stainless steel caps for standard Atlanta flue sizes, including 9×9, 9×13, and 13×13 inside-mount models, plus round band-mount caps for prefab systems. For less common sizes, we can source the exact unit within 2 – 3 business days and schedule the install. If you have the old cap’s model number, call (678) 263-7908 and we can confirm what’s coming before we arrive.
