Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
Copperfield chimney cap installation in Atlanta typically runs $340 to $690 installed, depending on the cap size, flue dimensions, and whether we’re replacing a rusted mount or starting fresh. We keep Copperfield-compatible caps and mounting hardware on our trucks, so most Atlanta jobs are done in a single visit. The typical discovery point is a leak, a rust stain, or a cap that’s visibly tilted after a storm, and by the time it’s caught, water has usually been working on the crown or the flue tiles for a season.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield makes chimney caps in a few distinct families, and the right match comes down to the flue shape and the mount style. The most common models we install in Atlanta are the Copperfield round and square multi-flue caps, single-flue caps with a slip-in or clamp-on base, and their spark-arrestor caps with 3/4-inch mesh. If you have a multi-flue chimney with two clay tiles exiting the crown, the Copperfield multi-flue cap spans both and anchors to the crown rather than the tiles themselves. That’s an important difference, because a single-flue cap bolted to a cracked tile won’t hold, and drilling into a tile that’s already compromised is how you end up with a bigger repair bill than the cap cost in the first place.
To identify what you need, check the manufacturer label on the underside of the existing cap or the box it shipped in. Copperfield stamps their model number on the skirt or inside lip of the base. If the label’s gone, measure the outside dimensions of the flue tile, not the inside, and match that to the base plate size. For Atlanta homes, we also check the mesh gauge: Georgia spring brings heavy pollen and pine straw, and tighter 3/4-inch mesh clogs faster than the wider 5/8-inch on older Copperfield caps. It’s a small thing, but it changes how often the cap needs cleaning.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Copperfield’s stainless steel caps hold up well in Atlanta’s humidity, and we generally recommend sticking with the real thing when it’s available. That said, quality aftermarket caps in 304 stainless with the same base dimensions perform comparably and sometimes cost 20 percent less. We’ll price both and let you decide, with the spec sheet on the table.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust stains running down the crown or brick. This means the cap’s galvanized base or the mounting bolts have started corroding. On Atlanta chimneys, acidic rain accelerates it, and once a bolt rusts through, the cap shifts and the leak worsens.
- Water in the firebox after a rainy spell. The cap is the first line of defense. If the cap is intact, water getting past it usually means the chase cover or crown has failed, so we diagnose before we quote; a new cap alone won’t fix a cracked crown.
- Cap sitting crooked or rattling in the wind. The mount has loosened or the base plate was sized wrong. A rattling cap works against its own fasteners, and eventually the rocking motion cracks the flue tile it’s clamped to.
- Birds, squirrels, or nesting material inside the flue. The mesh has a tear or the side skirts have lifted. A torn spark arrestor on an Atlanta chimney is an open invitation to chimney swifts in early spring; they nest fast and block the flue.
- Chunks of mesh or cap metal found in the yard. Once the mesh starts separating from the frame, the cap is done. Repair isn’t practical at that point; it’s a replacement.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Atlanta, expect to pay $340 to $690 for a Copperfield-compatible chimney cap installed. The range breaks down like this: a single-flue stainless steel cap with a slip-in base runs $340 to $460 installed. A multi-flue cap spanning two or more tiles runs $480 to $690, because it requires crown anchoring and a custom fit. If we’re replacing a chase cover alongside the cap, that adds cost, and we’ll show you the camera or photo evidence before we ever recommend it.
Every installation includes the cap, stainless mounting hardware, sealing of the base with a high-temperature silicone rated for exterior exposure, and a written guarantee on the work. If we find that the flue tile or crown is also cracked, we’ll show you pictures right then and talk through what can wait and what can’t. Nothing gets added to the invoice that wasn’t written down before we started. Nathan Corliss has been doing it that way since he started working flues, and it’s how we still run things at Ashby Chimney Atlanta.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re checking your cap from the ground with binoculars or from a ladder that rests on solid ground, you can spot a tilted cap or visible rust. That’s a safe owner-level check. What we don’t advise is getting on the roof to do the swap yourself. Chimney work at height means working off a ladder against an uneven surface, often with the pitch of a roof working against you. A slip is not worth saving a few hundred dollars. We’ve seen caps installed backwards, base plates matched to the wrong tile size, and bolts driven into cracked tile, and every one of those became a water problem by the following spring.
If the cap is failing and you want it handled right the first time, call us at (678) 263-7908. We’ll quote the cap, the mount, and the labor flat before we schedule anything, and you decide from there.
FAQs
A Copperfield stainless steel cap in Atlanta typically lasts 10 to 15 years before the base or mesh needs attention. Our humidity, acidic rain, and spring pollen load shorten the lifespan compared to drier climates, and caps with galvanized components fail sooner than all-stainless models. The mesh is usually the first thing to go.
A bent mesh panel or a loose clamp can sometimes be repaired, but a rusted base plate or separated mesh cannot. Once the frame has corroded or the mesh has pulled away from the skirt, the cap loses its structural integrity and the next storm will finish it. We’ll give you a straight answer on site: fix it if it makes sense, replace it if it doesn’t.
Most Copperfield cap installations take 45 to 90 minutes, including sealing the base and cleaning up. The time stretches if we need to remove an old rusted mount or make adjustments to the crown surface. We complete the vast majority of Atlanta cap jobs in a single visit.
