Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
We stock and install HeatShield-compatible chimney caps throughout Atlanta, with most cap replacements running between $285 and $540 installed, parts and labor included. If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already spotted the problem: rust streaks down the chase, a cap that’s pulled loose after a storm, or water staining on the ceiling near the flue. The cap usually fails before anything else because it’s the first line of defense against Georgia rain, and once it’s compromised, the rest of the chimney starts paying for it.
Installation is typically a one-hour job, and we keep HeatShield fittings on the truck so we’re not running to a supply house mid-appointment. Before we touch anything, you get a written price for the full job. That’s the Kingswell Way, and it’s how Nathan Corliss has run things since 2002: the number we write down is the number you pay.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield cap kits are built around two main series lines, and the compatibility question comes down to flue diameter and mounting style. The standard series covers single-flue and multi-flue clay tile chimneys with outside diameters from 8″ x 8″ up to 17″ x 17″. The extended series adds about a half-inch of adjustment to each leg, which matters on older Atlanta homes where the mortar crown has shifted slightly out of square over the years.
What catches people off guard: HeatShield caps are matched to the ceramic-coated lining system, not the fireplace brand or the home builder. If your liner was replaced at some point in the last decade and the cap wasn’t swapped at the same time, the fit is going to be wrong even if the old cap “looks fine.” That’s the single most common misdiagnosis we see in Buckhead, Decatur, and the older Grant Park stock where chimneys date back to the 1940s.
For replacement caps, we prefer OEM HeatShield parts when the original is available, but for discontinued sizes we’ve had solid results with Gelco and Copperfield equivalents that match the mounting footprint exactly. The key spec to verify is the clamping range, not just the nominal size. If the cap clamps at 12.5″ but your flue measures 12″, it won’t seat properly no matter how tight you run it. We also stock DuraFlex caps for flexible liner setups, since those occasionally share hardware compatibility with HeatShield mounting brackets.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust weeping down the chase or brick. Galvanized and even some stainless caps eventually lose the battle with Atlanta humidity plus rain cycles. Rust means the protective coating is gone and water is now passing through, not around, the cap. By the time you see stains, the internal fasteners are usually further gone than the exterior looks.
- Water pooled inside the fireplace after heavy rain. A working cap sheds water outward. A failing cap lets it run down the flue walls and pool in the firebox. In Atlanta’s March-April storm patterns, this shows up as dark damp ash or a faint mildew smell coming from the fireplace even on dry days.
- The cap wobbles or sits off-level. Clamps can seize and crack at the adjustment points, especially on older HeatShield caps where the steel has expanded and contracted through a hundred summer-to-winter cycles. A cap that isn’t seated square leaves a gap at one corner and that’s all a driving rain needs.
- Animal or debris signs at the flue opening. Atlanta has no shortage of squirrels. If a cap’s mesh screen is torn or the corner seams have separated, that’s an open house for pine straw, leaves, and critters. You’ll usually hear it before you see it, but nesting material near the flue top is a clear tell.
- Damper left rusty or pitted. Moisture that gets past a failed cap condenses on the metal damper below. Rust bloom on the damper plate in an otherwise dry attic and chase is a strong indicator the cap is the source of the intrusion, not leaking flashing.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Atlanta, an installed HeatShield chimney cap typically runs between $285 and $540. Most single-flue replacements land right around $350. Multi-flue caps and chase-mounted units push toward the top of the range because the mounting bracket and legs are larger and some require drilling into the chase top rather than clamping to the flue.
What that price includes: the cap itself matched to your exact flue measurements, removal and disposal of the old cap, installation with stainless hardware, a bead of high-temp sealant at the crown contact points, and photo documentation of the finished work. The written guarantee covers the installation and the cap hardware for the guarantee period; if the installed cap fails, we return and correct it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, not an add-on. We don’t sell it separately. It’s just the way our work is done.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here. From the ground, you can visually check whether the cap sits level and whether the mesh screen is intact. You can spot rust from the yard. But the moment you need to work at height, climb onto a chase, or loosen old clamps above a hard Georgia clay slope, you’re in territory where a slipped wrench or a lost footing becomes a hospital visit instead of a Saturday project.
Climbing a roof with a metal chimney cap in one hand is not the place to learn ladder discipline. We do this every week, with background-checked, uniformed technicians, and the work is covered by a written guarantee. FAQs
A properly installed HeatShield cap in Atlanta’s climate typically lasts 8 to 12 years, with stainless versions at the upper end and galvanized at the lower. The damp, hot summers accelerate oxidation at the corner seams where water pools after storms. If your cap is past a decade old and showing rust bloom, you’ve honestly gotten your money’s worth out of it. Call (678) 263-7908 for an exact assessment and a written price.
Sometimes. Torn mesh screens and loose hardware can be spot-fixed if the cap body is still structurally sound. But if the seams are split, the clamps have seized, or moisture is leaking through the cap itself, replacement is the honest repair. We’ll show you the cap photo before recommending either way, and nothing gets replaced without a written price first.
Most HeatShield cap installations in Atlanta take about an hour from ladder setup to cleanup, assuming no crown repairs are needed underneath. If the mortar crown has cracks that would let water bypass the new cap, we’ll point that out and quote it separately before any work begins. You shouldn’t lose more than a morning to the whole appointment.
Yes. Our Atlanta fleet carries standard and extended HeatShield series caps in the most common flue sizes, plus Gelco and Copperfield equivalents for older or discontinued sizes. If you need a non-standard mount, we confirm measurements on-site and return with the exact part, not a close-enough version.
